School lunch is more than a meal—it can be a meaningful learning opportunity. Every day, students make decisions about food, talk with friends about what they're eating, and experience nutrition in a real-world setting. CRUNCH Lunch Micro-Activities help teachers connect these everyday moments to STEM learning through quick, engaging activities before and after lunch.
The resources are available in two formats:
Slide-based activities that can be used before and after lunch.
Prompt poster with simple questions that encourage everyday conversations about lunch.

What are the Micro-Activities?
One of the most meaningful opportunities to connect nutrition education to students' daily lives is the school lunch period. Every day, students make decisions about what to eat, talk with friends about food, and experience the school food environment. Yet lunch is often viewed as a break from learning rather than as an extension of it. As a result, there can be a disconnect between what students discuss in nutrition lessons and what happens when they sit down to eat.
The CRUNCH Lunch Micro-Activities were developed in response to research showing that teachers value nutrition education that is directly connected to school meals. Using the daily school lunch menu as a starting point, these brief investigations, discussions, and visual explorations help students connect STEM concepts to the foods they eat at school.
The resources are available in two formats:
- Slide-based activities that can be used before and after lunch.
- Prompt poster with simple questions that encourage everyday conversations about lunch.
Who are the Micro-Activities for?
The Micro-Activities were designed for K-5 students. All students can participate, whether they eat school lunch or bring lunch from home.
How can I start?
We recommend starting with the pre-lesson and our two week sequence of slide-based lessons. We also recommend hanging the classroom prompts poster in your classroom close to the door with the monthly lunch menu underneath. After the first two weeks you can do the prompts on the poster daily and periodically a slide-based lesson.
How do I find the monthly lunch menu?
